Pear trees belong to the rose family. Native to Europe they have been grown all over the continent, also in Britain and even Western Asia for more than 4000 years. Modern cultivars make the pear one of the easiest and most adaptable fruit to grow.

1. Always choose a position in the full sun. Pears need good soil, regular water (in the growing season) and good drainage. They will not do well with wet feet. Although they can be pruned, or trained to grow against a wall, make sure that you have sufficient space for your tree to grow. A full sized pear tree will need a space of about 4m x 4m.
