(NOW) runs from Friday 16 to Sunday 25 October. As consumers, buying
organic produce
ensures good nutrition and health, supports food safety and the environment. NOW is an (extended) week of organic showcases around the country, in which organic producers, wholesalers, retailers, markets, restaurants and more stage activities including cooking classes, wine tastings and workshops with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding of the benefits of organic products and farming production systems. While there is a strong focus on foods, all organic products are represented. "National Organic Week will provide a platform for promoting the food quality and social benefits of going organic," states Eric Love, Chairman of CORE. He adds, "The increasing popularity of certified organic products also provides a future pathway for farmers in what is often described as diminishing viability in the non-organic agricultural production market."
Those into facts and figures may be interested to learn that 1 in 6 Aussie households buys organic produce occasionally (or more often) and organic foods are greatly increasing their share in the market. Organic food retail sales have recently eclipsed $6 billion per annum in Australia. And with 11,988,044 hectares Australia accounts for the largest amount of certified organic farmland in the world!
"Organic is not a luxury; it’s how food is supposed to be." Shane Heaton, BFA nutritionist
